12-9-16:  Sector Detector: What's next for the post-election rally and rotation?
Fear of missing out is suddenly the prevailing sentiment, overwhelming the previously dominant fear of an imminent selloff. I think this is due to a combination of: 1) uncertainty being lifted regarding the election, 2) domestic optimism about the US economy and business-friendly fiscal policies, 3) foreign investors seeing the US as the favored investment destination, 4) the expectation of rising inflation and interest rates rotating capital out of bonds and into stocks, and 5) a cautious but still accommodative Fed. Now that investors can focus on the many positive fundamentals instead of the news headlines, we are seeing healthy market breadth and diverse leadership led by value and small cap stocks rather than just the mega-cap growth stocks (e.g., "FANG"). Such sentiment has been a boon for fundamentals-based portfolios like Sabrient's. But of course, everyone wants to know, how much further can this rally go? And what happens when it inevitably hits a wall?   Read more at Scott Martindale's blog

11-16-16:  Sector Detector: Abrupt rotation is underway in response to surprise Trump victory
Proving to be a better magician than either David Blaine or Criss Angel, Donald Trump pulled a giant rabbit out his hat with his improbable victory to become President-elect of the United States. But even those few prescient souls who predicted a Trump victory couldn't foresee the immediate market rally. Everyone thought that the market preferred (and had priced in) a Clinton victory. But they were wrong. Small caps in particular have been on a tear.   Read more at Scott Martindale's blog

10-31-16:  Sector Detector: Earnings looking good and bullish rankings hold steady, but news is now trumping fundamentals
It is encouraging to see that Q3 earnings season is looking a bit better than expected and is on track to produce positive earnings growth for the first time since Q1 2015 (that was six straight quarters of negative year-over-year growth!) -- and on positive revenue growth, to boot. Entering earnings season, Wall Street's mood had turned negative after an expectation earlier in the year that Q3 would be the big turnaround quarter, so the upside surprises so far have been most welcome.  Read more at Scott Martindale's blog

10-6-16:  Sector Detector:   Stocks coil as Q3 earnings take the stage and election campaigns heat up
As Q3 came to a close, investors continued to show cautious optimism and the S&P 500 posted a gain for the fourth straight quarter. After a lengthy period of time in which markets were buffeted by the daily news about oil prices, jobs reports, Fed rate hike intentions, China growth, Brexit, US economic expansion/contraction, Zika virus, and ISIS inspired attacks, the focus has switched back to improving fundamentals. In particular, as Q3 earnings reporting season gets started . . .   Read more at Scott Martindale's blog

9-22-16:  Sector Detector:   Volatility returns as anticipation builds about Fed actions and elections
On Wednesday afternoon, the Fed came through to fulfill what was widely expected – no change to the discount rate just yet. But it did pump up its hawkish language a bit. The FOMC never wants to surprise the markets, so given that it had not telegraphed a rate hike, it simply wasn’t going to happen. Looking forward, however, given that the committee sees the balance of economic risks at an equilibrium, a hike in December looks like a slam-dunk unless something changes dramatically. Beyond that, they are essentially telegraphing two rate hikes next year, as well. The upshot is that investors were happy and dutifully responded with a strong rally across many asset classes to finish off the day.  Read more at Scott Martindale's blog

9-9-16:  Sector Detector:  Healthcare struggles under election campaign attacks, while Tech, Financial, and Small Caps lead an overall bullish market
Overall, it appears that the stock market continues to focus more on improving fundamentals than on the daily news. We continue to see improved market breadth, low volatility, lower sector correlations, and capital flows into higher quality companies with solid fundamentals, attractive valuations, good earnings quality, and strong market position. Small and mid-caps have been leading market segments, especially those from the Energy sector. Among large caps, Technology and Financial sectors have been strong during Q3, while defensive sectors Utilities and Telecom have pulled back across all market caps after showing inordinate strength for much of the year (although they still remain strong YTD). All of this is bullish – and is illustrative of the healthy broadening of the market.   Read more at Scott Martindale's blog

8-16-16:  Sector Detector:  Stocks methodically march ever higher as breadth continues to improve
I haven’t written in a few weeks. That can be a lot of time for the latest news to impact the character and direction of the market, right? So, what has changed since my last article? Well, not much, really. It seems the market isn’t quite so news-driven these days; instead it has been focusing on fundamentals and the overall improvement in prospects for the economy and corporate earnings. And these things are driving it ever higher.  Read more at Scott Martindale's blog

7-19-16:  Sector Detector:  Stocks break out as investors place their bets on endless monetary stimulus
The market broke out to the upside, as I predicted it would -- although the breakout came a good bit sooner than I anticipated. My expectation was that stocks would remain within their long-standing trading range until a clear upside catalyst emerged, such as improving Q2 earnings reports and forward guidance. But investors aren’t waiting around. Clearly, they are positioning in advance of the emergence of such catalysts.  Read more at Scott Martindale's blog

7-7-16:  Sector Detector:  Stocks remain inside their long-standing trading range, but an upside breakout grows more likely
The market has provided a nerve-wracking amusement park ride for those with the stomach to hang in there. Of course, the Brexit vote caused a nasty selloff due to the uncertainty of what comes next and the long-term ramifications, but the ensuing recovery was just as swift.  Read more at Scott Martindale's blog

6-21-16:  Sector Detector:  Fundamentals still look solid despite Brexit-induced volatility
After a nice little rally from mid-February until early June, investors started taking chips off the table, ostensibly in anticipation of Thursday’s Brexit vote. But Monday brought a fresh hint of optimism that Britain will vote to remain in the union, and the market responded with a healthy, broad-based rally. On balance, there appear to be good tailwinds for U.S. equities over the near term.   Read more at Scott Martindale's blog

6-1-16:  Sector Detector:  Sector Detector: Market breadth improves as investors rotate back to quality
The stock market rally off the February lows initially was led by the usual combination of short-covering, oversold bottom-feeding, and speculation (on “junk’). But then market action started showing signs of improving market breadth and a rotation back into higher quality companies -- the types of companies with characteristics Sabrient typically seeks in our GARP (growth at a reasonable price) selection process.   Read more at Scott Martindale's blog

5-18-16:  Sector Detector:  Global uncertainties, mixed economic signals, and summer doldrums conspire to paralyze investors
After showing weakness last week and creating some bearish-looking technical formations, stocks took a turn for the better on Monday. Perhaps it was renowned value investor Warren Buffett breaking from his usual aversion to tech companies and investing $1 billion in Apple (AAPL) that gave bulls a much-needed shot of confidence.   Read more at Scott Martindale's blog

5-3-16:  Sector Detector:  Bullish sentiment solidifies even in the face of lofty valuations
The stock market rally from the edge-of-the-cliff reversal on February 12 has continued, and an assault on the all-time highs from almost one year ago (on the S&P 500) now seems plausible. If it can hit new highs, the 7-year bull market is back in business   Read more at Scott Martindale's blog

4-18-16:  Sector Detector:  Investors place their bets on improving forward guidance
Q2 is well underway for the economy, while Q1 corporate earnings reporting season kicks into high gear this week. Although investors have pretty much written off the quarter as a stinker, they are eagerly anticipating forward guidance for the back half of the year. With the major indexes and underlying valuations sitting at lofty heights, investors are evidently pricing in improving fundamentals ahead, particularly here at home in the U.S.   Read more at Scott Martindale's blog

4-4-16:  Sector Detector: Sector Detector: U.S. equities continue to attract capital as long-standing uncertainties abate
Q1 turned out to be one for the ages, and after some extreme moves and bouts of volatility, stocks settled down and closed out the quarter with a flourish. After falling more than -10% from the start of the year until February 11, the S&P 500 was up +6.6% in March, up +13% since February 11, and finished Q1 slightly positive at +0.8% -- and it is up +206% since the depths of March 9, 2009.   Read more at Scott Martindale's blog

3-22-16:  Sector Detector: Bulls gather conviction as fundamentals regain importance in eyes of investors
March Madness is in its full glory with some of the most epic displays of competition, controversy, surprises, and visuals we have ever seen. Oh, and the NCAA basketball tournament is pretty incredible, too, but that’s not what I’m talking about. I’m talking about the U.S. presidential election. And it has produced some crazy headlines, news clips, and sound bites. Read more at Scott Martindale's blog

3-8-16:  Sector Detector: Stocks get vote of confidence, but tough tests lie ahead
Stocks got a vote of confidence last week, plus some short-covering support (and perhaps some panic buying (for fear of missing out), and now the S&P 500 as of Friday is down only -2.2% YTD, and up +8% since its close on February 12. 2-23-16:  Sector Detector: Stocks rally off long-term support levels while the Wall of Worry rises ever higher
The Wall of Worry just keeps adding more bricks. Although there has been much talk about the impact of low oil prices on the U.S. high yield debt market and by extension the U.S. banks that did the lending, the bigger worry now is the stability of the European banking system. It is like 2011 all over again. Read more at Scott Martindale's blog

2-9-16:  Sector Detector: Headlines continue to control market direction as valuation models languish
Headlines continue to dominate the trading landscape, perpetuating a news-driven trader’s market rather than allowing a healthier valuation-driven investor’s market to return to favor. After all, that’s what stock market investing is supposed to be about. Narrow market breadth and daily stock price gyrations have been driven primarily by three headline generators -- oil price, the Fed’s monetary policy, and China growth. The S&P 500 large caps closed 2015 essentially flat on a total return basis, while the NASDAQ 100 showed a little better performance at +8.3% and the Russell 2000 small caps fell -5.9%. Overall, stocks disappointed even in the face of modest expectations, especially the small caps as market leadership was mostly limited to a handful of large and mega-cap darlings.
